Katie passed through the office lobby with its glossy tiled floors and tastefully decorated waiting area. To the left of the receptionist counter, a wide corridor led to a bank of office doors.

She approached the receptionist. “Hello, I’m Katie Ackerman. I’m here for a meeting with—” She paused, swallowed. “I’m here to see Greer Latham.”

“Yes, his one o’clock,” the woman said and pointed down the hall without looking away from her computer screen. “First set of double doors on the right. They’re waiting for you.”

Katie’s breath caught. She snuck a glance at the clock on the wall behind the receptionist desk. She wasn’t late. And they? She was led to believe the meeting was with Mr. Latham only. She swallowed. “Thank you.”

She adjusted her briefcase strap on her shoulder and briskly headed toward the door the receptionist had pointed out. As her hand reached for the brass handle, a set of masculine fingers covered her own.

“Allow me.”

Katie’s gaze lingered on the bit of hair on the knuckles before glancing up.

The man’s face drew into a slow smile—the man from the plane. Her seatmate. “It seems we’ve met,” he said. “Well, in a manner of speaking.”

After a tentative nod, she pulled her hand away and took a step back. “Yes, on the plane. I didn’t know—”

She noted his thick, sandy-colored hair, cut to precision—that charcoal tailored suit and a crisp white button-down with a striped tie in shades of gray. His eyes never left hers as he eased the door open.

“Neither did I. I’m Greer Latham, and I assume you must be Ms. Ackerman?” She nodded and his face broke into a smile as he waved her inside. “Shall we?”

Katie followed him into a massive conference room, a showplace with ceiling-to-floor windows overlooking Waikiki Beach. The furnishings were old-world style, with dark woods and intricate molding. The plush carpet was a leaf design in shades of teal and cream.

A woman sat at the end of the table waiting with her fingers steepled. She had short-cropped silver hair and wore a white jacket trimmed in navy piping. She pushed her chair back and stood. “We’re so glad our schedules allowed for this meeting, Ms. Ackerman.” The woman extended her hand. “I’m Sylvia Latham…Chairman of Latham Enterprises.”

A slight smile broke at the corners of Greer’s mouth. “And my mother.”

Katie shook her hand. “So nice to meet you.” Mrs. Latham waved them over to a spot at the end of the long granite conference table.

Katie took her seat opposite Greer and busied herself unloading her briefcase with the documentation she’d spent the entire night before preparing. She set the stack in front of her and squared the edges so that the pile was neat and tidy.

Greer pulled at his right cuff. “The deal that’s on the table is a bit tricky, but after reviewing the proposal, it is likely one we could make work.” A smug assurance played across his face. “We certainly have the manufacturing capacity necessary to custom brand merchandise for your retail operation at the level you hope for.
